Glenn Røkeberg – Trusted Guardians
Rare access reveals untold stories within Britain's oldest regiment. Glenn Røkeberg's intimate black-and-white photographs move beyond ceremony, capturing the resilience and unguarded moments that define the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. This exclusive online exhibition showcases intimate, unguarded moments that reveal the full spectrum of a trooper's life. The collection captures both intense labor and centuries-old tradition, featuring images like Trooper Singh polishing his jackboots for inspection, and Trooper Prosser waiting for the daily Punishment Parade—a tradition dating back to Queen Victoria's reign.Røkeberg also documented moments off duty, including farriers blasting rock music while shoeing horses, the King's horses grazing on holiday in Melton Mowbray, Captain Bird hydrating himself and his horse on a summer ride to the pub, and Trooper Crathern topless and smoking a cigarette at Summer Camp. The photographs highlight resilience, such as Trooper Baleiwai remounting her horse after a bad fall to complete her Kit Ride, and ceremonial splendor, as seen in the portrait of Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel Jedge H Lewin. Røkeberg’s favorite image, the book’s cover, contrasts Corporal of Horse Andy Drummond looking small atop the massive Drum Horse, Harry. The collection even touches on the mystique of Horse Guards with Trooper Collins' horse clearly startled at night, referencing the barracks' ghost legend.Røkeberg dedicated the book to Captain Elizabeth Godwin, the regiment's first female Life Guards officer, who was his handler and the catalyst for his deep commitment to the project. He called it his love letter to the Mounted Regiment. The book Trusted Guardians — Inside The Mounted Regiment, published by Unicorn, is available to order online.A selection of 30 photographs is available as an online exclusive on Artsy, in three sizes with a combined edition of 18.
