Calling all storyboard artists, animators, and illustrators! Soon you can learn from the best: John Nevarez is coming to Oslo.

Join us from 7-8 of November as Grafill Moving Image offers a unique and rare opportunity to learn about the art of storyboarding first hand from one of the industry’s greatest.

John Nevarez has worked for over 29 years providing both story and design work for Television and Feature Films. He’s worked at some of the most known studios there are, such as Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Dreamworks, Pixar and Illumination. During his career he has worked on iconic animated shows and movies including Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, Kim Possible, Astroboy, Tinkerbell, Cars 2, Monster’s University, Inside Out, Coco, The Angry Birds Movie, The Garfield Movie, SCOOB, The Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and the upcoming features The Cat in the Hat and the CocoMelon movie.

He’s currently working as a Senior Concept Designer for Disney Imagineering providing story and concept art for their Theme Park Division. As if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he is also working on several exciting personal projects. John was recently appointed as one of the Artistic Directors at the Nemo Academy in Firenze, and offers personal mentorships when he can.

About the workshop: Through a mixture of lecture and hands on assignments, you will take a deep dive into storyboard techniques, guided by a master of the art. Learn how to give your visuals an intimate and personal feel by utilizing composition and camera work, and how to best use beatboards to showcase visual storytelling.

During the course you’ll get insight in setting up a scene for different genres and the answer to how to achieve a specific emotional tone in a sequence. You’ll be given an assignment to create a chase scene that really kicks - but how do you take something that’s been done a hundred times before and make it feel adrenaline fueled, dynamic, and fresh to the viewer? Luckily, John has some tricks to share with you.

This class is aimed at visual storytellers with a few notches on their belt. At the end of the course we guarantee you can add a few more tools to your toolkit as a storyboard and visual artist!

Take with you your working station/iPad/sketchpad and favorite drawing material. Lunch will be served on both days.

Meet and greet! On Saturday November 7th from 17:00 - 19:00, join Grafill Moving Image and John Nevarez for a chill evening with drinks, snacks, and some well needed socialization. Take care to bring a sketchbook, as in addition to mingling with like-minded creatives, you'll also have some drawing assignments to keep you busy and stimulated!
